C. Jan Dyke, M.D.
Professor of General Medicine
Dr. Dyke received his baccalaureate degree from Yale University. He received his M.D. degree from Cornell University Medical College. He completed a general surgery internship and residency at Walter Reed Army Hospital. Dr. Dyke was previously a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army Medical Corps and when he was in the Army, he served as Chief of Surgery at two of the largest MASH hospitals in the combat zone in Vietnam. Dr. Dyke is board certified by the American Board of Surgery. Dr. Dyke is currently a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians. Dr. Dyke has been a member, and is currently the President of the Board of Directors of his County Health Department. Dr. Dyke also served for many years as the Chairman of the Department of Surgery of various local hospitals. He has authored several surgical publications and has a special interest in medical history.
Susan Lee Engel, M.D.
Professor of General Medicine
Dr. Engel received her baccalaureate degree from Northwestern University, where she graduated with honors in biology and was in the top five of her graduating class. She received her M.D. degree from UHS/The Chicago Medical School. She did a six-month surgery and six-month medicine internship at Rush Presbyterian St. Lukes Hospital. She did an internal medicine residency at Northwestern Medical Center. She has been in general practice for over ten years. She is Board Certified by the American Board of General Practice. Dr. Engel is widely published in both book and article formats. Two of her publications are: How Your Body Works (book), Ziff-Davis Press, 1994 and How Your Body Works With Interactive C-D, Ziff-Davis Press, 1995. Dr. Engel has had many faculty appointments, some of which include Assistant Professor of Medicine in Service Series at King Drew Medical Center, UCLA, Los Angeles, California, Associate on the Complimentary Faculty of the Department of Pathology at Rush Presbyterian St. Lukes Hospital, and Associate Professor of General Medicine of the American College of General Medicine. Dr. Engel has directed, and participated in, many research activities, some of which include her directorship of CNS Clinical Research R and D for G D Searle and Company, directorship of U.S. Regional Clinical Support R and D for G D Searle and Company and participation in numerous university-setting research projects. A few of the professional associations in which Dr. Engel maintains a membership include the American Academy of General Physicians, the American Academy of Medical Directors, American Association for the Advancement of Science, American College of Physicians, American Federation for Clinical Research and the American Medical Association. She is currently on the Board of Directors of the American Society of Handicapped Physicians and the Vestibular Disorders Association. Dr. Engel has received a long list of honors and awards. Some of the honors and awards Dr. Engel has received include a listing in the Who’s Who in the World and Who’s Who in the Midwest, the Gold Award in the 1995 Health Information Awards which is sponsored by Mosby and National Wellness Institute, a listing as one of the 2000 Notable American Women, a listing as one of the Ten Top Scientists and Engineers by Standard Oil Company, the NASA-NSTA Award, the U.S. Navy Medical, Air Force and Army Awards, the Kodak Company Award, the Bausch-Lomb Award, the Illinois State Microscopical Society Award and the Chicago Tribune Literary Award. Dr. Engel is, and has been, actively involved as a leader in numerous community, charity and political associations, committees and activities. She has also been a very active member of the American Academy of General Physicians.
Wineetha S. Fernando, M.D.
Professor of General Medicine
Dr. Fernando graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Ceylon. She obtained some of her post graduate training in Ceylon (now known as Sri Lanka). While in Sri Lanka, at various periods, she served as a physician at the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation, Ceylon Ceramic Corporation, conducted several out-patient clinics of the municipality of Colombo, and was on the out-patient-clinic staff of Lady Ridgeway Hospital Colombo, the premier Children’s Hospital of Sri Lanka, which is affiliated with the University of Colombo Sri Lanka. She obtained further residency training in the United Kingdom in internal medicine. While in the United Kingdom, she also had training in geriatric medicine and psychiatry. These training programs were affiliated with the University of Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. Dr. Fernando completed a rotating internship at Trinity Lutheran Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri, and also trained for an additional period in general practice at the same hospital. Dr. Fernando has been in general practice for over fourteen years. Dr. Fernando has worked as a general practitioner in rural Kansas and as an emergency room physician at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend, and in Larned, Kansas. She currently cares for the general medical needs of psychiatric patients at Larned State Hospital and the State Security Hospital of the State of Kansas. She is a Diplomat of the American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review Physicians and Board Certified by the American Board of General Practice. She is also Associate Professor of General Medicine of the American College of General Medicine and an Affiliated Scholar of The College of William and Mary. Dr. Fernando is a member of the Barton County Medical Society, the Kansas Medical Society, the American Medical Association and a life member of the American Academy of General Physicians.
Steven Scott Herbets, M.D.
Professor of General Medicine
Dr. Herbets received his baccalaureate degree from St. Joseph’s College, graduating Magna Cum Laude. He received his M.D. degree from Thomas Jefferson Medical College. He also completed a period of post-graduate training at Presbyterian Hospital of Pacific Medical Center. Some of the awards and honors which Dr. Herbets has received includes his membership and official position in the Alpha Epsilon Delta Pre-Medical Honor Society and his membership in the Hobart Amory Hare Medical Honor Society. He has previously published and has participated in research which pertained to the defining of the enzyme system involved in the Sodium pump (Sodium and Potassium activation of Myosin-ATPase). Dr. Herbets has been elected to Fellowship in the American Academy of Family Physicians. He has previously been a member of the American Society of Internal Medicine, the California Society of Internal Medicine, the Aerospace Medical Association, and the American Medical Association. He is currently a member of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine. Dr. Herbets is also working towards becoming board certified in occupational medicine by the American Board of Preventive Medicine and towards obtaining a master’s degree in public health through the Medical College of Wisconsin. Some of Dr. Herbets’ previous directorships, authorships and memberships include his medical directorship at Beverly Manor West Convalescent Hospital, his authorship of a weekly newspaper column on medical subjects for the La Habra Advocate Newspaper and his membership in the Doctors Advisory Committee for the California Legislature. He is a private pilot and for several years has been flying his small aircraft (with two different volunteer medical groups) down to Mexico and performing medical volunteer work and services for small rural towns that desperately need medical care. Dr. Herbets was elected in December, 1999 to the Board of Directors of one of these groups, Liga International - Flying Doctors of Mercy. Dr. Herbets has been a very active member of the American Academy of General Physicians and served on the AAGP’s First Board of Trustees.
Renato H. Punsalang, M.D.
Professor of General Medicine
Dr. Punsalang completed his pre-med training at the University of the Philippines. He completed his medical education at the University of the East RMMM Center. Dr. Punsalang completed an internship at St. Vincent Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. He completed a period of post-graduate residency training in general medicine at St. Johns Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. Dr. Punsalang has previously been an emergency room physician. He has been in general practice for over 14 years. Dr. Punsalang has previously been affiliated with Morton Plant Hospital, Largo Medical Center and Clearwater Community Hospital. Dr. Punsalant is a member of numerous professional associations and societies. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians. Dr. Punsalang has been a very active member of the American Academy of General Physicians and served on the AAGP’s First Board of Trustees.
Harry D. Watkins, Jr., M.D.
Professor of General Medicine
Dr. Watkins received his baccalaureate degree from LaGrange College, where he graduated Cum Laude. He also completed a year of post-graduate studies at Georgia State University. He received his M.D. degree from the Medical College of Georgia. Dr. Watkins completed a rotating internship at the University of Kentucky Medical Center. Dr. Watkins practiced emergency medicine for approximately five years and has been in general practice since 1988. He previously did a research apprenticeship at Emory University School of Medicine and co-authored a paper pertaining to his research activities. He is currently an Affiliated Scholar of The College of William and Mary. He has previously been the medical director of several nursing homes in the greater metro Atlanta area. Some of the awards and honors which Dr. Watkins has received include his memberships in the Golden Key National Honor Society and the Sigma National Honor Society in Science and a special commendation award for his dedication to patient care. Dr. Watkins has previously published and has spoken in numerous professional and community forums. He has been a member of several professional organizations. He has been a member, officer and member of the Board of Directors of several Rotary Clubs, one of which was a recently chartered club of which Dr. Watkins was the Founding Secretary.
Flavia H. West-Huddleston, M.D.
Professor of General Medicine
Dr. Huddleston received her baccalaureate degree from Mississippi State University. She received her M.D. degree from the University of Mississippi. She completed an internship at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. Dr. Huddleston has been in general practice for over twelve years. She is currently affiliated with Pontotoc Hospital in Pontotoc, Mississippi. Some of the honors and awards which Dr. Huddleston has received include her election to Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. She is a member of the Southern Medical Association, the American Medical Association, the Mississippi State Medical Association, the Southern Association for Primary Care and the Northeast Mississippi Medical Society. Dr. Huddleston is on the advisory board for a home health agency. Dr. Huddleston is also a wife and mother of four children. Dr. Huddleston has been a very active member of the American Academy of General Physicians and served on the AAGP’s First Board of Trustees.
Kazimierz M. Sowinski, M.D.
Associate Professor of General Medicine
Dr. Sowinski obtained his M.D. degree from the Medical School at the University of Lublin, Poland. He completed a residency and assistantship in the Department of Surgery at the University Hospital in Lublin, Poland. He completed a Fellowship in the Department of Urology and Laboratory of Physiology at the University Hospital in Paris, France. He also completed a Fellowship in the Department of Cardiovascular and General Surgery at the University Hospital in Lausanne, Switzerland. Dr. Sowinski was a house officer in the Department of Surgery at the Community Hospital in Syracuse, New York. He served as a resident in the Department of Surgery at the Community Hospital in Roanoke, Virginia. Dr. Sowinski also did a Fellowship in Digestive Tract Surgery at the University Hospital in Rennes, France. He has been in general practice for over twenty years. He is affiliated with Montgomery Regional Hospital. He is Board Certified in general practice by the American Board of General Practice. He has been a very active member of the American Academy of General Physicians.
Randolph A. Coleman, Ph.D.

Dr. Coleman received his baccalaureate degree from the Susquehanna University. He received his Ph.D. degree in organic chemistry from Purdue University. When he was at Purdue University, he was also a predoctoral fellow with the National Science Foundation. Dr. Coleman is currently an Associate Professor of Chemistry, Director of Academic Advising, and Chief Health Professions Advisor at The College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, Virginia. Some of his many past and current professional appointments at The College of William and Mary include membership on the NCAA Compliance Committee and Academic Integrity Subcommittee, membership on the Curriculum Review Committee, chairmanship of the Biology Department Master’s Degree Review Committee, and membership on the Chemistry Curriculum Committee. Dr. Coleman is also a member of a Virginia State-Wide Task Force investigating ways to recruit students into the generalist areas of medicine. This committee has been awarded a $1.3M grant by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to pursue these activities. Dr. Coleman is also the recipient of the ACT/NACADA Award for Outstanding Academic Advising (representing the five-state mid-Atlantic region). Dr. Coleman has published many papers pertaining to his research in organic chemistry and he has been a speaker and presenter in numerous professional forums.
Ellen M. Lewis, R.N., M.S.N.

Ms. Lewis received a Diploma in Nursing from St. Agnes School of Nursing. She received her baccalaureate degree, cum laude, at Marquette University. She received her Masters of Science in nursing degree also from Marquette University. She is the past Assistant Vice Chancellor for the Advancement of Nursing and Allied Health at the University of California, Irvine, Health Sciences. She currently is the California Area Health Education Center Regional Director and Director of the Student Clinical Training Center at the University of California, Irvine. She is also a Standardized Patient Trainer for the National Board of Medical Examiners and the Macy Consortium. She is an Associate Clinical Professor at the University of California, Irvine, College of Medicine and is the Course Director of the Patient Doctor I Course. Some of the numerous honors and awards which Ms. Lewis has received include the Dr. Judith M. Lewis Outstanding Educator Award from California State University, the Founder’s Award in recognition of outstanding contributions in the field of disaster medical service, and the Lauds and Laurels Award for Professional Achievement from the University of California, Irvine. Ms. Lewis has published numerous nursing, medical and scientific papers, articles and book chapters. She has also spoken and presented in numerous professional forums.
